Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I…?

Get a Library Card

To sign up for a card, visit a branch of any Saskatchewan public library and ask a staff member at the circulation desk to assist you.

Adults & Young Adults (ages 14+) must show two pieces of identification, one establishing their current address and a second piece that verifies identity.

Children (under 14 years of age) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who must show two pieces of identification, one establishing his or her current address and a second piece that verifies identity. These documents will be used to register the child. The parent or legal guardian will need to sign the child’s library card. The signer assumes responsibility for any library charges incurred by the child.

Borrowers are responsible for all materials borrowed on their card and any charges, including fines and replacement costs, resulting from the late return, damage or loss of materials. Any fees owing must be paid prior to annual library card renewal.

Get a Pin Number (Personal Identification Number)
Library staff will also register a four-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number) on your library account. A PIN is required to access your Chinook Regional Library account from any electronic device. A PIN is also required to access all e-library services, such as databases and ebooks.

Forgot your PIN? Visit a branch or any Saskatchewan public library and speak to a staff member at the Circulation/Check-Out desk. You’ll need to show them your library card along with one other piece of ID so you can get your PIN.

Update contact information

Your library card is like a credit card and your contact information needs to be kept up-to-date. Let us know if your address or phone number changes by contacting any branch library. Additionally, your library card must be renewed annually.

Renew an Item
Most items can be renewed 2 times. If another patron has requested the same item you will not be able to renew it.

Log in to “My Account” here: https://catalogue.sasklibraries.ca
This will take you to the SILS page, where you can then access “My Account” from the right-hand side of the screen. This takes you to the login page, enter the barcode (no spaces), and pin number (last 4 digits of the home phone number, unless otherwise changed by you). After logging in you will see patron information.

After logging in, click on “x item currently checked out” underneath your contact information. A list of items currently checked out on your card will appear. To renew items, click in the checkbox adjacent to the title(s) you wish to renew, and click on the “Renew Selected” button.

You may also present your library card at any branch or Saskatchewan public library, or contact your local librarian (provide your library card number) to have your material renewed.

Phone-in renewals can also be done by calling 1-888-975-8165.

Replace a Lost or Stolen Card
It is important to let us know immediately if your card has been lost or stolen. Contact us by calling your local library.

Borrowing ItemsYour library card may be used at any Saskatchewan public library location and is required for all library transactions.

You may have up to 100 items checked out on your card at any time. High-demand items, such as DVDs and CDs, have limits on the number that may be borrowed at any one time. You can return items that you borrow to any public library in Saskatchewan.

Important Note: The borrower is responsible for all material checked out on a Chinook Regional Library card, and will be required to pay for the cost of repairing or replacing material lost or damaged while on loan to the borrower. Chinook Regional Library is not responsible for any damage or loss to a person or personal property sustained as a result of using library material.

Request an Item

You may have up to 100 requests on your card at a given time.

Log in to “My Account”. Once you are logged on, you can perform a catalogue search for an item and click on the “request it” button directly beneath the item. After clicking on the request button, you will be directed to a new page where you can select where you would like to pick up the item when it is available.

You will be notified when the item becomes available for pick-up.

Having Problems: Check and make sure that you are entering your barcode and PIN correctly. Next, ensure that the item you wish to request is, in fact, requestable. Reference items, selected resources, and some literacy items cannot be requested. Also, try updating your web browser. If you are still having problems contact us by e-mail or telephone.

Check the Status of my Library Account
Click on “My Account”
Type in the barcode shown on your library card, your pin number, then click on “login”.

Once you have logged in you can:

  • View and renew items currently checked out
  • Learn the status of your requests
  • Check if you have overdue fines
  • View your personal information (name, address, etc.)
  • Change your Personal Identification Number (PIN)

All materials can be returned to any public library in Saskatchewan. Items returned through the book drop after the library is closed will be checked in on the following day.

Find Information on Fines and Replacement Charges

Late Charges

Currently, there are no fines charged for items borrowed from the Chinook Library Region or the Swift Current Branch Library.

When late fees have been charged prior to COVID:

  • Adult material: $.30/day; maximum charge $6.30
  • Adult DVDs: $1.00/day; maximum charge $7.00
  • Teen material: $.20/day; maximum charge $4.20
  • Children’s material: no late charges

Late charges will be applied to items returned after closing on the due date.

If you have charges of $10.00 or over, you will be unable to borrow until you reduce the charges to less than $10.00.

A replacement charge is automatically added to your record for items that are overdue for 30 days. The replacement charge represents the average cost for the library to replace that sort of item plus a $5.00 billing fee. If the item is lost, you will be responsible for paying the replacement charge. Replacement charges also apply to damaged items.

Get Notified About Fines and Items Requested
Chinook Regional Library relies on three methods of notification – TeleCirc (an automated telephone system), email and mail. You will be given a choice as to which method you prefer. The library will send paper notices but would like to encourage you to try telephone or email notice. Final notices will be mailed. You can also use TeleCirc to check on the status of your account by calling the toll free number in Saskatchewan at 1-888-975-8165. You will be prompted for your library card number.

Please note for users of Yahoo Mail and Hotmail accounts: These two corporations use a technique called message deferral that can cause extreme delays in messages reaching such accounts. The library has optimized our systems to account for this, but we cannot guarantee that you will receive your notices in a timely fashion (or at all). We would strongly recommend monitoring your account online or using another email account for notices from the library.
