7pm Freedom to Read: The Sheik Revisited
February 28, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Freedom to Read Week encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The Swift Current Branch Library will mark Freedom to Read Week by reexamining a book that has been banned from the library for 95 years. In 1923, the bestselling novel, The Sheik, by E.M. Hull was banned by the Swift Current Library Board.
On Feb 28 at 7 pm, the library board will hold a special meeting to decide whether or not The Sheik should continue to be banned. The people of Swift Current are invited to attend the special meeting to examine this salacious novel, debate its disturbing contents, and give their input about whether the library should allow them to read it. Everyone is welcome!
